Different species, different rules...Females tend to be larger. In some species the male has a larger dorsal fin. In some there are color variations from male to female. In those that bear live offspring, the males have a modified fin that ejects sperm. Some species form bumps of their heads & fins during mating season. It all really depends on the species of your fish. The best thing to do is research the specific breed to find out what characteristics set the sexes apart.
