Q: Extremely Disgusting Habit

March 13, 2008 | By Mary C. | 6 answers | Expired: 2210 days ago

My 2 Pugs Hannah & Bella have a horrible habit
of eating not only their but my labs stool.
It has gotten so horrible that my lab can barely go in peace.
I have to chase them away from her and CAN NOT
let them go in the back unattended.
It has escalated to the point that I am totally disgusted with them.
HELP!
What can I do...I have tried everything!

My dog, too, has this nasty habit. Our vet checked her out and asked things like what kind of food we fed her and how often and how much and what kind of exercise/stimulation she got. He said sometimes they do it because they're lacking in some kind of nutrient and sometimes they do it because they're bored. From our answers he determined neither of those to be the case for our girl. He said they usually learn it from their mothers. They will eat their pups' poo to keep the area clean. But since my girl spent the first few months of her life on the streets she may have learned to eat it to keep from starving and has never really forgotten. Or, she might "just like the taste." It could be as simple as that.

We've tried the forbid pills, meat tenderizer, and tabasco sauce. Nothing worked. I recently heard that a daily teaspoon full of plain yogurt has worked for some people. That'll be our next try.

There's nothing worse than poo tongue kisses!

They also have pills that you can give all of your dogs that taste good so they take them easy, but makes their stool smell bad. I used it on my pup and it has worked. They're inexpensive. The brand i got was $6 for 60 pills. You can buy them at any pet store usually

I to have that problem with my puppy..they usually do that because their food is rich and they smell in the food..the vetsaid it is not a vitamin deficiency..its just a bad habit..they usually outgrow it..i purchases from vet forbid..or you can also put adolphs meat tenderizer in the food...that was the recommendations i had..and it seemed to work..also like the others said..stay ahead of the poop pick up detail..always tell her no when you see her going near it..I am also gonna try leaving it out there..and putting lots of pepper on it..good luck

One of my dogs does this also. I asked the vet about it and he said (after examining said dog) that there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him. As long as they're dewormed regularly (and they are with their interceptor heartworm prev.) it's just a gross habit. He said to think of it as him helping to clean up the yard. Yuck! Definitely get your guys checked out. If it ends up just being a behavioral issue then I'd suggest taking a squirt bottle outside with you the next time it's potty time and squirt the little buggers if they try to get poop.

My cockapoo did the same thing when he was a pup. I went to the local pet shop and they had several different vitamins to take. It is ususally a mineral or vitamin deficiency. None of the pills i gave him helped though. I started feeding him science diet dog food and he stopped doing it. The pills were just too big for him and when i cut them up he wouldnt eat them because they looked and smelled nasty. Try changing dog foods first!

IT IS NOT ABNORMAL. ACTUALLY I WOULD START BY SEEING IF THEY HAVE A VITAMIN DEFINICY
