What is your opinion on eating in front of your pets is it a bad idea or a good idea?

I don't particularly think it's good or bad unless you're allowing them to sit at your feet at the table and beg for food. It would also be bad if your weren't feeding your pets appropriate proportions of food. Then you're teaching them bad habits. My pets have been trained not to sit and beg at the table so they just go about their business when we're sitting down to a meal. They all have their food in their bowls if they're hungry. Besides, the majority of people food is bad for our pets and overfed pets don't live as long or as healthfully as others. Some people food is okay, but when most people prepare it for their own meals it's usually highly seasoned, salted, sugared, buttered, and otherwise made to be unhealthy even for them, so it's definitely not healthy for our pets.

I think it's a great training experience. Whenever I bring in a new foster, I try to eat every meal around them so I can teach them not to beg. When they're good about leaving me alone at the table, I go to the couch, and then start sitting on the floor. Just make cats leave you alone until they ignore you altogether and have dogs sit however many feet away until they quit staring at you the whole time.

begging is a learned behavior. if you never feed them from the table they won't learn it. but once is all it takes
