Dry skin on my Dalmatian

My dalmatian is starting to get dry skin on his back. Its not itching him at all. just starting to flake a little. i know i have to be careful about the protein in take. I was thinking about putting an egg in his food. then i was thinking about some oil in his food. Just would like to get some advice.

I would try switching my dog to a raw diet, There's lots of info on the how to's and benefits of feeding a natural , species specific raw diet online. My two to chihuahuas get raw chicken wings, cut up raw beef, liver, and whatever other organ meat I can find in the supermarket. Their skin has improved and their breath too because of chewing up and eating the soft bones in the wings. Google "dogs raw diet" and there is lots of info.

Besides the solutions you've already thought of, try good food. None of the commercial grocery store brands will do as well for the skin and coat as foods like Halo. Even vet prescription foods don't do as well for skin as that brand. I model and I can tell you, good food is the key to great skin. Read some of the Halo testimonials about such things as digestive and skin isseus being cleared up by feeding it. I kept my last older dog healthier to the end using it. You can see much less waste in their waste, if that makes sense. Most of the skin issues in canids come from the colors and fake flavors in those mass store foods. It doesn't cost any more than a vet visit does to feed the good stuff for a year. Try it for a month and see.

I give my dogs fish oil every day. Their skin is no longer dry & their coats are soft & shiny too. Its good for pets with allergies, arthritis, & all sorts of health problems. I make sure mine get 20mg/lb of the omega 3, EPA. They don't need added supplementation of omega 6, as its already in the normal diet. You can safely give them fish oil made for humans or you can buy the kind packaged for pets. Just be sure its purified to remove mercury.

Here are some sites with info about fish oil for pets:

In addition to a good diet, Salmon oil is a great source of omega oils which are good for the skin and coat, I have personally used for my dogs the Yummy Chummy Alaskan Salmon oil with great results in as little as a week. Sometimes even changing to a Salmon or fish formula dog food can show good results as well.

I have a Shar-Pei and she has HORRIBLE skin problems. Before you do anything I'd just put in a quick call to you vet. I bet the receptionist will even be able to get the answer for you. Good luck.
