Q: Dry cat food for very allergic cat?

My cat keeps pulling his hair out along his tail and along his spine. The vet has been giving him cortizone shots, but said we cannot keep giving it to him every six weeks. He said the only food that would be completely allergy free for cats is fish and potato - no chicken, rice or grain. I am having a hard time finding any - does anyone know of a cat food for allergies.

Our cats and dog were all but bald, had severe skin rashs etc. All due to food allergies. After much research we discovered and also with the advice of the UGA vet school we went to Dick Van Pattons Natural Balance. It has NO fillers. He even has a allergy food for both. Even science diet is FULL of fillers. They list protein and if you look it is from "cornmeal". When our dog almost died from food poisoning the vet tried to put her on science diet. I showed her that the protein in it came from cornmeal she was shocked! Since we have changed ALL food to Natural Balance which comes in fish, deer, duck, sweet potato and others in which he raises all the food. We now have very healthy pets. Ones that were truly at one point near death. My daughters 3 cats all have grain allergies as well. Since she changed over she has healthy cats to. They have canned and dried. It can be purchased at any pet supply store. I promise you it makes the difference if it truly is an allergy. We went through so very much with 5 cats and one dog until this food was used. Now we feed NOTHING else. It also helps procduce less stools ( in girth), less smell. It is not loaded with junk and fats. I usually use a bit of warm water since our dog is "Fluffly now, not Fat" and it helps fill her quickly. It keeps them satisfied longer as its not full of junk. We have people comment on our dogs coat every single time she is out and seen. All in all the cats and dog have a much healthier life now. I would highly suggest you try this. Being we went through so much it was like finding a miracle for us. As I said we did so much research and were appalled to find all the fillers and general garbage put in pet food. Natural Balance is pure healthy meat and veggies and that is all.The cost is about the same as any other dog/cat food. You actually end up using less as it satisfies them more and longer. Please let me know if you try it. I have reccomended it to others with great success. I can't stress how much it helped our pets.

I've always heard lamb & rice was a good food for allergy stricken pets. Is it possible he's plucking from stress (some birds pull feathers for this reason). Is it a recent problem or long-term? If it's recent, try & think of anything that might have happened about the time the plucking started. If you live in a large city or near a vet college, ask for a referral to a specialist. Another option is to buy small packages of different kinds of food & see if any of them help the problem. I guess fleas have already been ruled out. I have 2 Burmese who're allergic to flea bites & get bald spots if they get infested & I don't catch it in time.

What's so hard about finding fish and potatoes?
I had a cat who pulled all the fur off her beautiful tail, and then off her back. She had a tumor growing in her mouth and tongue, and the vet figured that she probably couldn't groom herself properly and out of frustration just pulled the hair. She was my little Kitcat. She had freshly cooked chicken every night the last several months of her life, as that was all she would or could eat.

if you can't find any dry food(have you tried a local small pet store one that has natural products)
then maybe you can make your own- boil potatos(even though starch is not good for pets) and lightly bake fresh wild caught fish and feed as needed- Try the book- Whole Pet Diet: Eight Weeks to Great Health for Dogs And Cats by Andi Brown tells you what pets need and why- great book easy to read and follow- Try it instead of the cortizone shot- find out what the cause might be instead of giving meds as a solution- good luck hope you at least check the book out
