Dog whisper and victoria

I use to watch ceasar and loved what he did but then I stopped watching, started watching victoria and I love her technic more of rewarding . Today I was in shock when I saw ceasar using an e-collor and choke chains. He seems so harsh ,now to me It just seems sad to know he would us such things.
Great input I kinda agree , I think I would like to try a e-coller and a choke chain to see how this feels to see if this dogs feels the pain as I imagine.

Mary every one hasthei ropinion, I love ceasar for the many dogs he has rescues and I have seen many of his show, 2 days ago I saw the epesode of him using an e-collor on a dog later I saw the epesode where he was using a choke chain dog looked scared I actualy can hear the chain as he pulls or the thump when he uses his hand and sound and I know victoria condones those things.I see nothing but possitive from victoria. Ceasar has even left a toy poodle with his tail between his legs looking scared. To each is own. Like one who answered said just take what you can use from both.

Jezygirl, I am so sorry to hear about your dog.

I feel excactly what azzurrapl said in her posting.

I worry about what is not edited on Ceasar's show...his show is terrible enough with the clever editing. What he does is dangerous-Kohler method of dog training, 1950's style. MAKE the dog behave-roll it on the ground, hang it from a chain, shove your fist in his mouth because he bites while grooming (this one was on the first or 2nd season). Instead of using anything positive.

I speak to a lot of dog trainers in my area and around the country-not one of them agree to Ceasar's methods at all and say he should have never had his own show.

Watch Victoria's older seasons when she was in Britian-the US is far form her first rodeo with dogs-and the ones in Britian were just as "bad" as Ceasar dealt with (even a human aggressive Am Bulldog) and EVERY dog she worked with she used positive training methods.

Some food for thought.

Like a lot of TV -- You have to sort out the show and research the facts.

Cesar Milan's techniques are based on dog pychology, understanding the energy of your dog, Victoria is a dog trainer. I love both of them as well but the way Cesar relates to the dogs is more on a primal level as they would if they were amoung each other, in a pack. I would never agree to any harsh treatment of any animal and I have every watched every episode of Cesar Milan and have never seen animal crualty. And yes, not all dogs will or can be rehabilitated in the same way, and remember it's on t.v, not everything is shown.

To stacy:

Ceasar rarely gets "last chance" dogs-he get s LAZY owners who want a fast result. I am being realistic here.

If my dog was killing my chickens or livestock its one thing to use an e-collar-but this dog was chasing a cat in the house. Big difference.

Ceasar's way is based on bullying and beating the crap out of your dog until it submits and is so afraid of you it turns on you. I know-I went through it. My dog was last chance-and guess what? He is dead. All Hail Ceasar.

So YOU need to see all sides of the story as well.

I went through the same quandry watching Ceasar and Victoria. My dog is kind of funny about training with treats. He really doesn't respond well to it, but he also doesn't respond to Cesar's methods either. My dog responds best to good old fashioned praise and the occassional "NO" with an ignoring of him to show him the behavior I don't approve of. This past season of Victoria's dealt more with the "last chance" aggressive dogs. Positive reinforcement training does work just as well with aggressive type behavior too. I am not convienced that "pack leader" training needs to be as harsh. Dogs like kids know when a person is in charge and when they are just passively leading. Mostly I think the dogs are responding to the fact that when training, no matter what method, you are taking an active role in their life and taking charge so they can finally relax. I certainly learned with my cat that scolding him for scratching the furniture was only teaching him not to scratch when I was looking. The moment he started to get praise and lots of petting for using his scratching post, he stopped using the furniture, even when I wasn't looking. Oh and he was 11 years old when I finally learned how to teach him the right way.

I watch and enjoy both shows. One thing you have to remember is most of the dogs Caesar gets are "last chance" - where other training techniques often haven't worked. You also need to realize there are many methods of dog training and all of them can work on certain dogs and all of them can fail on certain dogs. Positive reinforcement is generally the best training method for the majority of dogs. But for some dogs, it just doesn't work. So you have to resort to other methods. You can learn useable techniques from both shows as well as other shows about dog training. Experiment with your own dog(s) and find out what works best for them and you. That's what will be most successful.

As far as dog trainers go I think Ceasar is great. He may not be for everyone and people need to find what works for them. I have used shock collar in a last ditch attempt to break a new dog of trying to kill my chickens and guineas. I was at a loss for what to do,and with a very heavy heart I borrowed one and put it on myself first and they are not as cruel as you think they are. I don't advise people to run out and get one but it worked wonderfully and we all live in peace now without fear of one pet killing another. So my comment to jerzgirl is to lighten up and I hope you never have a difficult situation that you are really at your wits end and have to make hard decisions that go against your own nature. If someone had asked me two years ago about what I thought about shock collars they would have gotten an earful, but now ??

I love Victoria Stillwell...her methods are practical, kind, and WORK. And everyone can use them. Her show doesnt come with a warning like Milan's show does if you notice.

I LOATHE Ceasar Milan...his methods are barbaric and antiquated. People love him because he is a "quick fix"-hang a dog by a choke chain and zap him with an e-collar and all's well that ends well right? I will never forget one episode where he was literally shocking the life out of a German Shepherd because the dog went after a cat. That is not dog training that is ABUSE.

Also, Try Alpha rolling a 150 pound Mastiff...see how well that works. ;o)

A few years ago I went to a trainer with my dog who was agressive that was a Ceasar Milan type trainer...guess how well that worked-the dog had to be put down for agression-it never got better...

All my puppy buyers are going to be required to read Victoria's book before bringing home their puppy. Ceasar;s book isn't good enough to wipe my bottom with. Or even to line my puppy pen.

Do you mean that he is using shock collars or elizibethan collars?
