Q: Dog tags?

Jamie M.

I'm just curious to see how many owners keep all of their dogs' tags on at all times.

My dogs have:
1. the ID tag with thier names and my information on it
2. their rabies tags
3. the city license tags
4. the tags that have the Home Again chip # on it

I definitely understand why all the tags are important for the dogs to wear, but there are just so many!

ChiChi is a very small dog; having a collar full of jingly tags is bulky and uncomfortable. She wears only the one with my information on it, but she never strays from my side. Gunther, master of slipping out the door, has all of his on at all times.

I recently heard that the city actually requires you to have the license tag on your dog at all times, does anyone know if that's true, or if it varies from city to city?

Which tags do you think are the most important? Which tags do your dogs wear at all times?

My two wear their ID tag, county dog license and micro chip #. Buy the plastic ID tag and the tags won't make noise.

Simone lost her rabies tag so all she wears is her identification tag. I used to have all her tags on her but the jingling got on my nerves. I think the most important tag is the identification tag in case she gets away from me.

Either that, tape the tags together with your favorite brand of tape.

If you're fed up with all the noise from the associated tags, just take off the dogs collar while they're indoors, and when/if you let them outside by themselves put the collar with the tags back on.

My dog wears her name tag & microchip tag. There are multiple microchip companies now, and there is not a universal reader. This can be a problem if your dog turns up at a shelter which does not have the right reader. Scary thought. My dog also has a tatoo in her ear begause she is a released guide dog. That is probably the safest way to make sure you are reunited with your dog if she gets lost

Ours have the Rabies tag and City license on it. They're loud, but I'd rather them be annoying and FOUND then silent and LOST!

I only put Aoife's collar on when we are out and about (running errands, running, on the way to the dog park, etc) or if she is home alone (which isn't very often). I have the same issue with her being WAY too jingly - she has one of my husbands dog tags, her name and my # tag, her Camp Pendleton licence, her Oceanside licence, a Ventura County licence... Just a whole lot for her to run around with all the time.

My little pups always have their rabies tab, city dog liscense tag, name tag with our address, and pet insurance tag. I often feel like it is too much and it makes noise, but then I know when my dogs are sneaking up on me, and it gives the birds and mice a fair warning they are approaching!!! When the tags get wet they make my white dog look very gray though. My dogs use harnesses that we keep on them all the time. I was thinking about sewing some of the tags to their harnesses?

I keep them all on except for rabies because your state license is proof of that. We also have our St. Francis tags to keep them safe! Also, we have both of ours microchipped.
