Q: Dog tags?

I'm just curious to see how many owners keep all of their dogs' tags on at all times.

My dogs have:
1. the ID tag with thier names and my information on it
2. their rabies tags
3. the city license tags
4. the tags that have the Home Again chip # on it

I definitely understand why all the tags are important for the dogs to wear, but there are just so many!

ChiChi is a very small dog; having a collar full of jingly tags is bulky and uncomfortable. She wears only the one with my information on it, but she never strays from my side. Gunther, master of slipping out the door, has all of his on at all times.

I recently heard that the city actually requires you to have the license tag on your dog at all times, does anyone know if that's true, or if it varies from city to city?

Which tags do you think are the most important? Which tags do your dogs wear at all times?

The only time my dog gets his tags taken off is for a bath, and they go right back on. I never risk letting him go about without them. You never know. You don't want the one time they're not wearing them to be the one time they run out of the yard or get lost or something. My dog has that many tags on too. He has his name tag with the phone #, his homeagain microchip tag, and his city license tag. It's a lot, but if something should ever happen, I hope those tags will help bring him back home to his family! I say keep them on!

I always keep her rabies tag, microchip tag, ID tag, & license on her at all times. Plus I keep them on a separate collar from the one I attach the leash to since there's always a chance the collar can break or they can pull out of it. I have had lost pet alerts come through my network because someone's house was broken onto & the dog got out or someone had a car accident & the dog escaped. There are any number of ways your dog can be separated from you so its just safer to have ID on them. Microchip readers aren't universal so you can't depend on a scan to pick up the chip. You can always buy inexpensive silencers to fit around the tags so they don't jingle if it really bothers you.

I keep all the tags on my dogs; just rather be safe than sorry. At least if one, by chance, falls off there are more for ID purposes. All my dogs have been larger breeds, so it really doesn't bother them anyway.

Keep the license tag and rabies tag on at all times. Your contact info can be looked up by the license tag AND the microchip. If you want to keep the ID tag on her it's not a bad idea, but if you are into reducing bulk the 2 are enough. I keep the 3 on my 2 at all times, and they are both chipped. It's just safer. I wish they would just require chipping and get over the licensing thing - but the counties want that cash!

Rabies tag and Licensing tag are a must...they are on our dogs at all times. You could get a collar that has a metal id tag embedded onto it to help cut out some of the noise.

My dogs only have to wear their rabies tag and the city licence...but the cats have to wear their rabies tag the city license and a lifetime spay/neuter tag. I have ID tags on all mine so the dogs have 3 tags and the poor cats have 4 tags.

You are suppose to have the rabies, license tag, and the ID tag of your pet. The microchip tag is optional. Most places have the scanner that will get the info from the microchip that is implanted.

My dogs have their ID tags and rabies tags at all times even when sleeping.. they are just used to them and Cookie my smaller dog loves her collar and her tags if I take them of she will let me know she wants them back. Our city doesn't require dogs to be licensed so they don't have license tags but I'm soon moving to a city that does require them so I will add those as well. And as for the jingling I love that sound and it lets me know where my dogs are.

My Zeus has 4 tags.........

MicroChip Number
Lifetime License Tag from the County (I have this "riveted" to his collar)
Rabies Tag
A tag I bought at PetSmart with all our info
a Pet Charm, it's a fire hydrant

I have seen the "silencers" at different pet stores.....I don't mind Zeus jingling, it makes him easier to find in the dark! (he's mostly black) ;)

If you google dog tag silencer, you will see they have these little holders for sale that prevent your dogs tags from jingling. A lot of the people at my dog park use them.
