Q: Does your shelter have a behaviorist on staff?
Who performs your animal evaluations?

I am a behavior and adoption specialist at the Potsdam Humane Society. As A dog trainer I had noticed that many dogs in obedience classes were adopted from local shelters with behavioral isues. A friend convinced me we could make a difference by setting up a behavioral program for shelter dogs. The Potsdam Humane Society was interested but had no money in the budget. I volunteered my services for six months and the program became an instant success. They now pay me!I use SAFER Testing along with the ASPCA's Meet Your Match Program. A Behaviorist is a Veterinarian who has also completed further studies in animal ethology.

We have a staff that conducts behavioral assessments after 3 days when the cortisol levels become lower. The animal is routinely tested thereafter. We also have a behavior department available to work with dogs who need extra work and a canine coach department that works the dogs daily.
