She isn't always always on a leash but when we are outside walking or going to some place.....We live in a neighborhood and if my dog gets off her leash she will run, run, run..... and we have to chase after her. We usually get her but I don't want it to happen and she ends up getting lost..... what do I do?

I agree with Deb--get a martingale collar. That's all I will use when walking dogs. And also figure out how your dog gets off leash. One last thing--please teach your dog to come when called. As you can see, it could be the most important thing you ever teach her.

It depends on which dog you're talking about. Our Daisy used to be pretty good off leash. She didn't wander off and came when called. She only had issues with a few dogs. Our Bubba would head for the hills, when off leash, so he stays on leash all the time, now. Our Princess is obedient, but would be a danger to others if we let her run free, so she is absolutely, possitively always on a leash. It feels good to let your dog have it's freedom, but it may not be fair to other dog owners if you do. Your dog might be well behaved and friendly, but the other guy's dog may not like strangers. Use good judgement.

Never, never, never chase your dog - you've made it into a game so that's why she's running away from you. Try the opposite. With her on a long lead and away from you, YOU run the other way and call her to come. When she gets to you, give her a treat. Get some training books and learn how to perfect this skill.

Figure out how she gets off, and fix it... New colar, new latch for the leash, etc.

Unless you have a fenced area, a leashed dog is the best safety insurance.

How does she get off her leash???? Does she slip out of her collar??? I have found a great collar, it is the Martingale Collar, it slips tight when the dog pulls. I had a problem with my Border Collie slipping out of his collar, but since I switched collars I don't have this problem anymore. To answer your questions, my dogs stay on their leash at all times.

I leash my dogs only when its necessary like taking them to the vet or to stores. We live in the country where they have many acres to run free. I would suggest to you to have your dog chipped incase it gets lost. Our three dogs have a chip because its the best thing for them and for me.-

None of my dogs are allowed off leash unless they are in a secure fenced area.I'd keep her on a leash and get an obedience class into her and you.

Short answer: yes, CJ is always on leash when we're outside, unless in a well-fenced area. BTW, my dog Critter once slipped his leash, when we were walking on a street in my town. I remembered something I read---that, if you chase a dog, he'll run, thinking it's a game, and if you yell his name, he'll think you're upset with him. But, if you kneel down, whistle and pleasantly call his name like always, he's more likely to run to you. That's what I did with Critter and he ran right back to me.

A long line might also be very helpful in training your dog to move around freely but you will still be in control when you call him or her.
