Q: Does the sun bleach animal hair?

My hair is ash blonde. By the end of the summer, it's REALLY blonde...my hairdresser asked me where I had such natural looking highlights one time. :-) Does the same thing happen to animals when they are in the sun?

Horses tend to get discolored in the sun light. Most of the time the black fades into a deep chocolate brown. They also can get sunburned on their pink bits. My horse is black and white and his muzzle sometimes gets sunburned. I actually put childrens sunblock on his nose because when he was a baby it burned so badly that it became inflammed and peeled. In some parts it was ulcerated. I was so upset with myself since I can totally empathize with him since I am very fair skinned. We now make the sunblock part of our grooming routine along with the fly spray.

yes just like us the sun affects are pets to it can also over heat them. So id be careful

I do know this. Read this in one of my cat books. You have to be careful with a white cat being in the sun too much. They actually can get sunburned. Especially a pink nose.

it can, but i wouldn't do a test run. animals, especially light haired animals, also can get sunburn. i use to pet sit for a white cat that would sit out in the sun all day and the poor boy came in w/red skin.

Sometimes black dogs that are outdoors all the time turn a brownish tinge...but not always.
