Q: Does my dog have diabetes?
Recently my dog is drinking lots more water and seems to be losing weight. Should I be worried?
If your dog is drinking more water and losing weight, have your dog checked for possible diabetes.
The three principal signs of diabetes in dogs all start with the same letter — polyuria (increased urine volume), polydipsia (drinking more water than usual), and polyphagia (increased appetite) — together with weight loss. Describing these signs will get your vet’s attention in a hurry — and launch diagnostic tests for sugar levels in the blood and urine.
There are other signs of canine diabetes (such as rapid onset cataracts in the eyes, urinary tract infections, and vomiting or diarrhea) but the three Ps are the principal ones.
Untreated diabetes can be fatal for dogs.
