I've read you can sometimes teach them to talk, but no luck here. If yes, did you get the bird as a baby?

One of my friends has one who "chatters" a lot. Sometimes it does sound like he is saying actual words. Sometimes it sounds like he says Henry which is her son's name.

My dad has a parakeet that could talk. He even taped him saying "Pretty Bird" and "Kiss Kiss". It wasn't very clear but you could make out what the bird was saying. I have two parakeets right now and neither of them says a word. I hear that you need to get a young one - before they molt. I sometimes see young parakeets at PetCo - they are the ones with no white on their heads and very thick black stripes. Definitely, a male parakeet and you need to spend a lot of time with him. Parakeets are flock birds and get lonely by themselves. That is why I gave up on my male parakeet and got him a girlfriend!

I had one parakeet as a child who did talk. I've been told that the males are more likely to talk. We just repeated the same short phrases to him every day & he just started talking one day.

My Grandmother had a parakeet that talked. She did not have it from a baby though. She just said the same phrase repeatedly to him. Now he wouldn't carry on a conversation with you, but when he would see or hear familiar people, he would say things about them. For example when my uncle Walt would come in the room or speak he would say..."Walter's flaky", "Walter's flaky". He would repeat a few times and then stop. He was a smart bird. He received alot of attention.
