Q: Does anyone else's cat eat fur off of floor/blanket/et cetera?

We have a Himalayan who (obviously) sheds prodigiously. Her three daughters eat the fur that she sheds. When we catch them and take it out of their mouth or off their chins, they look at us as if we were taking food out of their mouths. We wouldn't have a problem with it, but they have enough fur to create a great hairball without adding hers to the mix. My husband asked his coworker whose wife is a vet, and she hadn't heard of such a thing.

Ditto doesn't eat fur off the floor but when he cleans himself and fur comes off, he eats that. I am relieved to find out that he's not the only cat that does that.

Oh yes I have the problems as well and as you have tried taking it from them, and it's like taking food out of a babies mouth. I have a few short haired cats that don't shed to much but the longer haired one does the same thing as well as cleaning everyone in the house everyday. They are close so I hate to pull them apart as they love eachother like crazy. And trust he hacks up the biggest hairballs I have ever seen. Now to get them to stop I had no luck but I did find something that helps. It is called hartz hairball remedy, It's sold at walmart for like 4 bucks .It's like a oily paste that is flavored with Liver I think. it's in a tube and what you do is squeeze some out like toothpaste and you Rub it on their Paw and they lick it up. Mine all just love it and it cuts down on the hairball hackers like my Bosnizzle(long haired cat) who is the one that eats furr and Cleans every other cat in the house..It works Great and they like it so it's no fuss no muss..Annie

OH MY! I thought my cat was the only one stupid enough to do this! He eats fuzz balls shed from my DLH, lint, dust balls, etc, off the floor. I yell at him when I see him (as you said he does not need to add more to his own fur mix), and he runs away before I can take it out of his mouth. To make it even funnier, he turns his nose up at tuna and other table scraps, but eats fuzz whenever he gets the chance.
