Q: Does anyone else have a cat with airborne allergies?
Every year around this time my cat gets sneezy and coughs a little. Her vet said it is probably allergies. She is the first cat I have had with this problem. Has anyone else had cats with allergies and does anyone know of any home remedies I can use for her cough? She doesn't cough much, but I can tell she is a little uncomfortable when she does.

Cecil my snowshoe has allergies as well. He wheezes this time of year with them and sneezes. It's awful. The vet put him on some meds and it seems to help. I also found keeping my windows shut and the central air on all the time helps him alot. It keeps the outdoor air borne items out. I also don't dust with a cloth anymore I use the vacuum to dust. I try to put him upstairs or in another room when I do. It's a hard thing to deal with for sure. Good Luck. I would not give her ANY type of cough or any home remedy without asking and getting the okay from your vet. Cats are very sensitive to many things. Even a tylenol can kill them. Better to be safe then sorry. Hope she does okay.

We see allergies several times a year and have a chinese herbal that works well for the breathing issues, but most vets don't know anything about intergrative medicine.
So I would discuss the several different antihistamines with your veterinarian. Just because one doesn't work doesn't mean another won't. Steroid injections aren't AS harmful for a cat but are still not good to be given often.
But I would also be VERY concerned if after the "allergy season" if the breathing troubles do not clear up. H.A.R.D. is a disease caused by feline heartworms that have symptoms breathing issues. See www.knowheartworms.org/ for more information!

Yes, years ago I had a cat with terrible allergies. After several years of searching for a remedy, I finally found a vet that treated her with birth control pills. Cortizone shots can be very hard on the kidneys -- so this was the perfect solution. As your vet if this might work for your cat.
