I know Heart worm protects in the spring and summer, do you use it year round?

Yes, you should. Many of the products contain a general dewormer too.

If you don't continue all year round, then to be placed back on the medication, your pet would need to have a blood test.

Our dogs are on a combination product called Tri-Heart Plus
as it contains ivermectin for heartworm protection and pyrantel pamoate for treatment and control of roundworms and hookworms. We give it year around, but we still have the blood test done in May of every year.

There are some precautions to observe since some animals are allergic to this medication. Especially to be under strict supervision of vet are collies or herding breeds if used over the recommended prevention dosage.

We started on the year round protection because of frequent travel to Southern states where mosquitoes can be a year round problem - but have continued it though we no longer are traveling out of Wisconsin.

It would depend on where you live. In some parts of the country, it is not necessary during the winter months. However, for warmer climates, you may have to give it year-round. We used to be able to stop November through April with a heartworm test given before restarting the preventative, but a move one state further south dictated that our pets are on heartworm meds year-round.
