Do you think your dogs know when you getting ready to leave them and go on a trip?

Some people say no, I am simply projecting my feelings onto my dog. I tend to disagree. My dog has been very clingy this week. What do you think?

Yes, for sure!!! Ours know as soon as we start packing up the car (since they can see the car from where they live.) As soon as they think we are leaving, they will go bananas and beg for attention.

Yes, they know. I don't know if they know when your coming home too? Last night my Mom said everyone had left and Nico lied down - fell asleep around 7 pm and then woke up at 11 pm - and wouldn't go back to bed - I came in around 1 am? My Mom said around 12:45 am he started whining and wanting to get outside - he was wagging his tail and really awake when the car pulled up and i got out... he gave the limo driver a few kisses whil ehe brought my bags in? I don't know though. just glad.... When I have left, I have made sure Nico has a good time - with either having family come up here or asking my dog walker to come several times and arrange a playdate with her dogs while i am away? Hope Nico doesn't think it's more fun when Mommy's away though?

You bet. And, the more you travel, the more they learn about your behaviors. It used to be the suitcase - - now it's where the suitcase is stored.

Absolutely! Dogs and cats are far superior to us in picking up cues -- they "see" what images are in our minds and they sense our moods. They already know even before the suitcases come out.
I had a dog once who howled for hours at the same time my sister and I were 30 miles away in a boat on a river in a storm. She knew we were in trouble (and we really were) and didn't stop whimpering and howling until we walked in the door.

It's been my experience that they definitely can figure it out! I think more than anything they learn patterns or routines you go through in getting ready to leave, whether it be just getting your purse out and packing a suit case for a longer trip. Also I think they can sense it in our emotions too. Especially if we're not looking forward to being away from them. :) So ya, I'd say you're not crazy at all! :)

I agree that they now when you are leaving. I put my shoes on to go to work and our dogs carry on like crazy. And when I put my coat on they sit in front of the door and whine. It's so sad.

I absolutely believe that they know. Well, maybe some more than others, but my Rufus knows for sure, days ahead of time. Way before the dreaded blue bag comes out to be packed! If they get to come with, I tell them every day that it's OK, they get to come with. If not, I don't say anything, and they look at me like their life is over.
