I know people who just don't go on vacation as a family or at all, becasue they don't want to leave their pets with a sitter. Do you avoid vacations not to leave your pets?

HAHA, Oh YES... My Mother won't leave for any kind of family get away that is more than a day long anymore, because we raise dogs, and she's too afraid that whoever she hires is not going to do a good job and she's going to come back and find all her dogs dead, or something... kind of irrational, if you ask me.

My husband and I skip most vacations unless a member of our family can watch our pets. For us, pets are family members as well, and they are too needy to be left with just anyone.

No. But, we don't travel for too long at a time. I took the kids away for 12 days over Thanksgiving. My husband joined us for the last five days. The sitter said that the dogs were out of sorts by the last day. I think our new limit is a week for any of us.

Well when I travel I try and take pet friendly trips, if I can't then I try and leave my pet with family, if all else fails then I rely on a friend to watch them

I agree this is a problem. Especially my husband seems reluctant to leave all of the pets, even for a day or two. You can get sitters or take some pets to kennel but these can be expensive options not always idea.

We do mostly Pet Friendly trips and travel with them. I really dislike leaving them eventhough we have a great friend who will stay at our house and care for the our fur babies.

find a reputable pet sitter or friend to look after your pets. sometimes reliable young adults are living at home and would welcome a chance to housesit and look after your animals.

I take my dogs almost everywhere I go, except in extreme heat or extreme cold conditions. I have wonderful sitters that come right over to my house to care for my dogs & cat, and it's very rare that I'm gone for an extended period of time -- yes, it is a concern to leave them, especially the 15 year old. I know they are in good hands, I just miss them alot!

We avoid vacations longer than a weekend because we do not want to leave our kitties home alone. In September we went to Pittsburgh for a Steelers game (we reside in NW Indiana)and my mom was going to check on and visit our babies. I called her several times a day throughout the weekend to see how they were doing. They day we left Pittsburgh I insisted on waking up at the crack of dawn to get home as soon as possible so I could see my little darlings!

We solved this problem years ago by having a trusted pet sitter who house sits (stays overnight) at our house while we are gone. We take lots of vacations--at least 4-5 weeks a year--so its important the fur kids are taken good care of by someone they like. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, a small parrot and 2 ponds so it is not only better for them its less expensive too! We are fortunate to have had a married couple do this for us for many years. We trade a week or two at our beach house for their services--their preferred choice of payment! We also let our veterinary hospital know in case of an emergency while we are away.
