In our area, you can buy the parvo/distemper shots at several hardware stores. Tractor Supply carries them and a lot of others. I usually save money by administering the puppy shots and wormers myself. Several areas have Rabies clinics either in the community or at the vets offices where they offer cheaper rates for the rabies shots. Our shelter does not administer the shots, but when you adopt a dog or a cat, you are entitled to take them to the vet of your choice for free and get their first parvo/distemper shot and rabies shot, health check and wormed for the cost of the adoption. This also includes spaying or neutering your pet. They do need the heartworm preventative which is not included, but if you are going to own a pet, you must be responsible.

you might do better to ask other people in your area specifically about the cheapest places to take a pet for vet care. if someone asked me the least expensive vet in my area, i could definitely tell them. in response to another question, i just mentioned Freecycle and Freeuse networks, which are groups of people in a particular area that basically gather online to give away stuff they don't need or want and look for stuff they do need or want. these groups tend to be full of 1) animal-lovers, & 2) people looking to stretch a buck. poke around online, see if there's a Freecycle or Freeuse group in your area. someone there would surely be able to direct you to the least expensive vet in your area, and if Animal Control offers shots at a good rate there, again, someone in the Free group would surely know.

also, in our area, Pet Co. sometimes will have days where they offer cheap vaccinations. they probably do this at all Pet Co. stores, so you might want to check with your nearest Pet Co. if you do find such an event, expect long lines.

Most animal shelters would give vacc. The costs vary, but I would reccomend to tell you to go to the vet so you can get an appropriate exam and make sure it is healthy. Vets are a little more expensive but they will show more attention to your animal and will like to recheck to see how they are doing. Hope you see a vet soon, if you go ask many questions.

I'm afraid your not ready for a pet, if you have to ask the cost of shots you cannot affor a dog, shots are the cheapest care you need, they get sick, they need monthly heartworm, expensive, and will have to have a test before meds are given or you dog could die, flea med, good food, and always be prepared for an emergency.
