Q: Do male dogs spray?

I am thinking about adopting a baby yorkie, male. Will he spray in my house? Do they spray like cats? Does it help to have them neutered early?

If you housebreak the dog correctly and have him neutered, you shouldn't have a problem with marking. Recommendations as to the best age to spay/neuter vary so check with your vet.

We adopted a neutered mini poodle last May - he has been marking in the house since we brought him home. But the marking has definitely decreased as he has become more secure in his new home. He was a year old when we brought him home so don't know how long this behavior was an issue. I think that any male dog could mark in the house. It would depend on many factors such as age, competition with other dogs in the house or next door, anxiety about the new environment, etc.

Recommended age for neutering varies depending on who you talk to. At our shelter we will spay or neuter pets at a very early age, depending on size. Research shows no adverse affects from performing the surgery earlier than the previous thinking of waiting until the animal is 6-9 months old. And there are actually benefits to doing it much earlier than that.

I have a chi who still marks, typically in my sons room if allowed. I close the door so he can not get in and I don't have a problem with him. It is a jealousy issue with him. Not all male dogs do it but yes some do!
