Q: Do I feed my Blue Heeler enough?

My Blue Heeler is always active but he can be very lazy. When he was a puppy I used to feed him twice a day. In the morning and at night, a whole cup full. Now, I only feed him once in the mrning, a whole cup. Do you think it is enough? He weighs about the normal weight a Blue Heeler should.

I agree with what has been posted already, it depends on the type of food and I would break it up into two meals. Go Cattle Dogs!

If your vet thinks that his weight is normal, I wouldn't worry about it too much. But I would split his feeding to twice a day-it's healthier for them. Make sure you are giving him a good quality food. You might want to give him a little more also, maybe 3/4 cup 2x a day. Limited treats are ok, but I never feed table scraps.

If he is at a good weight and his weight is staying stable, I would think he is getting enough food. You should be able to easily feel his ribs and there shoud be a defined indentation at his waist. You didn't say how old he is, but as dogs get older and a little less active, they will eat less. I would also be watching for other signs that he is hungry (e.g. gobbling his food down very quickly). I do agree with what others have said about giving him his food in 2 separate siitiings.

We have four. They get one cup in the mourning and at night. If there hungry they will eat it if there not hungry they won't it just depends on how active they were that day.

www.akc.org check out blue heeler. Some dog foods are more filling than others. I would probably give him a milkbone or a little skinless boneless chicken at night if we are serving it for dinner.

If your dog's weight is ideal, I wouldn't change the amount you feed him. Your dog's weight is always the best indicator of how much he should be fed. I would however, split your feedings into two half-cup portions. This is healthier for your dog and will probably make him happier too! Imagine if meal-time was your favorite time of day, but it only came once every 24 hours.

I'm guessing he about 40lbs, he should be having about 1 1/2 cups a day & I would suggest feeding him 2x a day, make it a high quality food, feeding an entire days feeding at one meal isn't health for your dog, it can cause bloat, also our dogs look forward to their meal, it makes for a long time between meals & they will start begging & it's easy to give in & give them extra treats, they need a couple treats but If any of my girls got fed once a day they would drive me crazy in the evening.
