Q: Do Hamsters make good pets?
I have a friends who is giving away a hamster cage food bedding everything free.. I would like to know from an experienced hamster owner if they are hard to get tamed and taken care of easily or it can depend on the hamster... and if you would recommend having it. i don't have too much time... at first i could do an hour a day till it got tamed then probably an half an hour or soo... any help would be appreciated! :) Thanks

I have had hamsters for years and let me tell you they are a great pet. They don't require too much time but regular handling is a must if you want the hamster to stay tame, especially breeds like russian dwarf hamsters. They aren't too difficult to tame but it also isn't going to happen over night. For the first day let her adjust to her home and leave her alone. The next day or two start to handle her gently and more and more from then on. After a while she will like to be held and will even get excited to see you. One of my hamsters will climb into her wheel when she want to be picked up and the other just wildly runs along her cage asking to come out. Good Luck!

Hi, Mal! Shayizone recently got a hamster. She would be the perfect person to ask. You could probably send her a message and she'd give you some of her observations on being a brand new hamster owner.
