Q: Do dogs have trouble adjusting to Evo?

I recently changed my shih tzu from Science Diet to Evo. I did this slowly, but she still has very loose bowel movements after almost 3 weeks. Is this because of the high protein in the evo and will she adjust to it?

You have switched to a very good food, and very rich in protein as well. If you had any of your other food left, switching slowly by mixing the two would have helped with the transition. Try feeding smaller portions throughout the day until the stools are back to normal, you can also add a 1/2 to 1 teaspoon low fat cottage cheese to the Evo, that should also help firm up the stools in a couple days. Stick with it, she will adjust and will benefit greatly from the change as well.

My German shepherd/Lab mix can't handle too much protein (she also gets the runs with too much meat). You're doing the right thing by slowly weaning her onto it (it IS one of the best foods out there), but maybe if you go even slower & add a bit of yogurt or cottage cheese to help bind her up (I have a zootoo member to thank for that suggestion). Rice is also good to add to help harden her stools. I just wish I didn't have problems with my dog...unfortunately I have to stick with Purina One...

try an enzyme supplement like prozyme to aid with digestion.
