They are prone to skin problems. You won't always see the problems on the skin, but the smell is there. Also their big floppy ears get infected a lot. Dogs ear canals are L shaped and quite deep. You can't see any thing deep down with out a scope that the vet has. You can however twist a paper towel(nothing else it can shred) and corkscrew it into the ear as far as it can go. You can't hurt an ear with a paper towel. There should be nothing in it but a little pale yellow ear wax if that. If it's dark brown, black or crusty, scabby or bleeding , it's probably infected. A swab at the vet can tell if it's bacteria or yeast or both, and give you the proper meds. Also anal glands can smell, but that's only when they let loose and is not constant.Grooming animals at a vet hospital, Iv'e probably have cleaned and treated a zillion ears.

I taught dog obedience class for over 20 years, and if there is no ear infection or skin infection causing the problem, I think basset are alittle stinky. No offense, just a hunting dog smell to them. When a dear friend would bring hers to dog class I would jokingly call one stinky and she told me she always bathed him the night before class so he wasn't stinky. She tought he smelled great, so each to their own. I love how my dobermans' feet always smell like Fritos, Other think I am nuts. So love your dog for what he is, but maybe give a bath a little more often to help with the smell. Also make sure the dogs' bedding is cleaned atleast weekly, because they do have a oil to there coat which will cause oder to build on blankets, beds, etc.
