Q: Do any of the top 10 shelters adopt out guinea pigs?

Just wondering if any of the top 10 shelters in the Makeover contest adopt out small pets, such as guinea pigs and ferrets. I'd be interested in knowing about their adoption process for these pets, how they screen adopters and what kind of information they give out about these small animals.

The Jefferson County SPCA does accept just about all small pets too. The screening process to adopt is the same as for dogs and cats. They once had some roosters from a cock fighting ring.

Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City get all sorts of animals (including guinea pigs). We are an open-door shelter, so no animal is turned away.

However, our specialty is dogs and cats. So, in order to get the guinea pig adopted out as soon as possible, we will reach out to our resources that work with guinea pigs specifically.

However, if they do not have room, we will shelter the guinea pig until such time as they do. No animal is every put down for lack of room or money.

If you would like to learn more about our shelter, please visit us at www.libertyhumane.org

P.S. Please note that we are in the Top 10 and that we are the Libery Humane located in Jersey City, NJ. There is another Liberty Humane Shelter located in Georgia. I am not sure of their policy on guinea pigs, though I know they are a great shelter too - as all the shelters in the zootoo.com competition are!

HSBC does adopt out small pets. Ive had a sister in law adopt a ferret from them and she was very happy with the process. I have also seen rabbits, guinea pigs, and even a pig.

The Humane Society of Barron County does, as well as ferrets, rabbits, birds, and other small pets! In fact, we have five guinea pigs in our care right now! We screen our guinea pig adopters just like our cat and dog adopters - they must fill out an adoption application that answers many questions, including about provided housing, who will be responsible for the care, and if they are aware of the needs of the animal they've chosen. We also have large informational handouts that we give out to our guinea pig adopters. One of our local vet clinics has a guinea pig as a mascot and we know that we can rely on them for any help we need with answering questions.

The Central Missouri Humane Society in Columbia, MO does adopt out small pets including rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters and mice, birds and reptiles, iguanas, and ferrets! You should check out their website for their adoption procedures www.cmhspets.org/adopt.htm. They do a great job there of screening people and helping people make sure the pet is something that will fit with their lifestyle so that the pet is properly cared for. My daughter loves to go in the room with the bunnies when we are there visiting!
