Q: Do all Jack Russells have an insatiable appetite?

October 1, 2008 | By KellyGrace | 6 answers | Expired: 2197 days ago

I feel like I am starving my JRT but I am feeding her as much as she needs for her size. Why is she so hungry? She wolfs everything down. I haven't seen her chew in years.

How old is your JRT? Have you asked your vet about this? My JRT is 3 years old...I feed her twice a day, but she prefers to eat in the evening. Sometimes she leaves her morning portion until 4pm and then I give her her evening portion and she eats that, too. But sometimes she doesn't finish all of her evening portion. My JRT weighs 13 pounds and just had her annual checkup--the vet said she is perfect weight--so I know she is not overweight. Does your dog get many or any snacks during the day? Is your dog very active? All of these things could play a role in her ranvenous appetite.

Sounds like she is just a fast eater. Lots of dogs are like this. I have heard that if you put something large (like a big rock) in the middle of the bowl it forces the dog to slow down while eating. They also sell commercially made bowl to help your fast eater slow down a bit. Years ago, I had a dog like this. He was a chow mix and he would eat the food so fast and then look at you like "I'm starving, where is some more food." Now I know he got plenty of food each day, so he could not really be hungry. With some dogs, it is like they do not have that "I'm full" sensor, so they would literally eat until they got sick if given the chance. Seems like if she is staying at a healthy weight, then she must be getting enough food. Maybe you could feed her 1/2 of her food in the morning and half in the evening.

Since you mention "in years," it sounds like Angel has been this way for a long time, yet she's okay. I'm guessing that there's no need to worry about it at this point. Your eyes and your vet concur that Angel is in good health, so just don't let the guilt complex make you overfeed her. You're doing just fine! Jacks are very energetic dogs and can also be a bit "over the top" regarding begging for food like they're starving: But they're not starving. If you want to feel better, just visit Google, click on Google Images and type "Jack Russell terrier" in the search box. You'll get to see lots of different Jacks and gauge their weights/conditions to Angel's. You might also make a point of asking your vet to tell you his/her opinion of Angel's weight. Good luck!

I have a female that might be an exception of the rule - we usually have a bowl with dry food available all the time, but she does not over-eat.

I looked around at a couple web sites and found that over feeding JRT's is very common because of what you are describing and they are very prone to being over weight. I also found a couple articles that said you should feed them 3 times a day. So it would seem you are doing just fine, just common of the breed to want to eat. Hope this helps :-)
