Q: Could my pet be a pet-therapy dog?
My dog loves to meet new people and I think he would be a great pet-therapy dog. How do I get involved?
If you think your pet might be a good pet-therapy dog, choose a pet-therapy program in your area, go through the training, and get to work!
Wherever your dog will visit — nursing homes, hospitals, schools — the pet-therapy program will administer a so-called temperament test to make sure your dog can function in all sorts of circumstances. Don’t take this requirement the wrong way. We’re sure your dog is sweet and loving — but how might he react to sudden loud noises, crowded elevators, accidental rough handling, and so forth?
And don’t worry. If your dog “fails” certain tests at first, training is available to get him ready. Pet-therapy programs often use more than dogs — birds, reptiles, cats, and even llamas hit the road to visit pet-starved people.
