Q: Congestive Heart Failure and Heart Murmur
August 21, 2012 | By Breezy P. | 3 answers | Expired: 259 days ago
My dog, Romeo, has been diagnosed with a stage 4 heart murmur as well as congestive heart failure. The vet recommended a cardiac care diet, as well as several medications (heat meds, diuretics, antibiotics, and probiotics). The only brands of cardiac care diet I have found is Royal Canin and Hills Science Diet. Both are very expensive. I am recently unemployed and a full time student with 2 rescue dogs 3 rescue cats. All of my money has gone towards Romeo's medications and vet bills. Does anyone know of a less expensive brand of cardiac care food I can feed him? Or, does anyone know of a good place I can post the amazon wishlist for them? Thank you so much.

I don't know of any other brands of cardiac care food. I think Purina used to have one, but I have no idea if they still make it. You might check on their website for their prescription diets. You might also do a search online for homemade cardiac care diets. The main thing is to keep sodium levels low. I don't think the homemade diets are too complicated. Not sure about the wish list. I've only seen them for rescues so they were posted on their homepages. Are you on Facebook? If so, you could post it on your FB page.

Sorry I don't but I do know that Baby a chocolate lab that was rescued a couple years back he was with the rescue I work with he had a heart murmur they never gave him any meds or even a specail diet and he was great he never seemed ill at all he was adopted and is still around the vet said he would only live for a couple more months but they were wrong I don't know if this works for every dog with a heart murmur or not all I know is Baby just needed plenty of exercise to be happy and healthy!
