the best thing you can do is get them cut out, it is painful for the dog to try & brush them out even with conditioner and painful even when they have them and walking around with them, why it the dog at the point that the fur is matted?? That shouldn't happen if the dog is even brushed once a week and that not allot for a dog with fur like that

How bad are the mats? Are they very close to the skin? If they are so close to the skin it is "pulling" on the skin, DO NOT CUT them out on your own, please bring them to a professional groomer as trying to cut them out on your own you may cut their skin and do some serious damage.

As for conditioners, contact your local groomer as they will always have the current products and what's best for your particular dog's coat.

In addition, to avoid mats in a dog that is prone to getting them, you must brush him DAILY, not every other day or weekly, but daily!

i would just shave the dog. thats what i did with mine when i first got her. she had horible mats. It releaves a lot of pressure on their skin. the mats also make them itchy. and they also look ten times better after the fur grows in. just keep the dog in shade if you decide to shave her. dogs can also get sunburnt.
