Q: Competitive Obedience: Dumbell
We are almost ready for the open class,All I need is for her to take the dumbell. We have been working on it but I cannot get her to take it on command. After I put it in her mouth she holds it and we can even complete the excercise. I have read books and talked to other trainers but every method of teaching it I have heard are basically the same. Place in mouth say take it ect. or use the pinch ear method(I do not want to use). I want to hear input or new creative methods. Thank you!

Try looking up articles by Terry Long if you haven't already. She has her CPDT-KSA, is an agility trainer & writes for DogWorld. She trains with positive reinforcement instead of punishment. She's written many articles on competitive obedience training so maybe you can find what you're looking for archived online. You can probably also contact her with specific questions through DogWorld. Good luck.
