Q: College students and dogs...

I am a junior at Chico State, my freshman year I bought a dog from the Butte Humane Society, He is my dearly beloved Cairo. This summer much to my mothers disappointment I rescued a Chihuahua puppy... my question is, Has anyone ever owned a dog while at a college a good distance from their parents? What did you do for holidays (flying is ridiculously expensive)? How were you able to deal with parents who love your babies but are frustrated with traveling and living situations?

Although I am a university professor rather than a student, my situation is similar. I bring my dogs when I can drive and when the destination is dog-friendly. Sometimes I have to leave the dogs at home - either for their own sanity or to be fair to family. I always get a dog sitter to stay at my home. I have been able to find reliable local college students who normally live at home (nearby). They are typically glad to get out of their house for the holidays, and my pets get to stay where they are comfortable. I pay the students some, but it is not nearly what a kennel would want, and my pets are much happier at home. Of course, I always leave detailed pet care instructions. I would rather have my dogs with me all the time, but that isn't always realistic.

Good luck finding a solution that works for you.

I have been out of college for some time now but I have been traveling home to visit my family every Christmas for many years. I have always had multiple dogs and cats so bringing them all home was not an option. Some years ago I boarded them at a boarding facility but now I use a pet sitter. I feel better using a pet sitter knowing that my kids can stay at home even if I am not there.
