Why would cats call loudly when they are carrying a mouse or even a toy they think is prey? my female does it a lot with her toys.

I think she is just proud of her conquest and is trying to bring it to you to show off. I once had a female cat deliver her prey, a LIVE mouse, to the middle of my bed in the middle of the night! That was s treat!

I always assumed that they were just bragging to you that they had caught this dangerous adversary and calling attention to their prowess.

I would agree with the above assessment. Our cat Moose used to "hunt" every night in the living room (he and his sister were indoors cats), and would call out about his "conquest" as he carried it up the stairs and delivered it to our bed-- usually a catnip fish or mouse! It was a "meow meow meow" or "yow yow yow" that got louder and louder as he climbed the stairs.
