Q: Cats and the Canada/America Border
November 24, 2008 | By Kris S. | 4 answers | Expired: 1625 days ago
I will be soon transporting a cat from Detroit MI to Buffalo NY, and am wondering what the laws are concerning the transport of cats across both the american and canadian borders. Anyone know if there are permits or anything i need to do this? Thanks!

Also, make sure their passports and visas are in order, as US Homeland Security is tightening up. If they have been caught committing any serious crimes, like DUI-Catnip, they may not get in, or out, as the case may be. Otherwise, you have gotten good advice from the other answers.

A friend of mine crosses all the time- WA in and out of BC. I know proof of a rabies vaccination is required, but I'm not sure about the others. Her cat has all her current vaccines (which you should have for your cat's sake anyway) and my friend keeps the records with her in the car or boat. I'm not sure she's ever been asked, but you don't want to get screwed up. The very worst that can happen is you'd have to find a vet in a border town and revaccinate.

As far as I know you have to have a record of all their shots but am not sure which ones they need to have besides rabies which is the most obvious. You could always try to call one of the Border stations to make absolutely sure. I would hate for you to start your trip and then be stopped after you drive all that way.

last time I made a border crossing with pets, Canada required full vaccine records. Granted, this was crossing into British Columbia, and it was also six years or so ago... but from what I understand, nothing has changed.
