Sometimes. And sometimes they can just sense them, like how an animal can sense a storm coming b/c of the added ions in the air.
Next to my old bedroom at my parents is an attic that sits over the garage. In that attic are Mayan relics taken from a tomb in Belize that my cousin had stolen while he lived on a rain forest conservation camp there. When he moved back to the US and stored his things there, suddenly my room started having activity. I've seen shadows in there, heard a woman humming, and several times a strong scent of vanilla would appear out of nowhere that left this heaviness to the air. Literally one second there was nothing and the next I was surrounded by it. Use to scare the crap out of me, and the only way I'd sleep with the light out was if one of the animals was with me.
There were about a dozen occasions where the animals, particularly Abintra, would freak out. The most memorable time was the first time I saw a shadow. Roo was with me and I hadn't fallen asleep yet. I started getting that old feeling that I wasn't alone and Roo started staring at one spot in the room and just wouldn't stop. Then she looked over at my dresser and when I followed her gaze that's when I saw a shadow jerk passed the dresser and into the wall leading to the attic. She ran out and I turned the light on.
Then there was another time at David's when I was visiting Braveheart who was still in quarantine. We weren't anywhere near the toy ball in the room, but out of nowhere it flew across the floor and slammed into a cat carrier with enough force that it bounced off. Braveheart didn't act any different or seem to notice anything, but I couldn't replicate what that ball had done even with David's help.
Some cats and dogs may be able to see ghosts just like some children can. I've never seen a full-on apparition, just a few shadows and disembodied voices and odd happenings. But usually I think it's the energy of the ghost, that extra electricity in the air like a thunder storm, that gets their attention.
