Q: cat "Calming" aids
Has anyone used any of those "calming aids" that you can give your cats prior to trips, vet visits, etc?? I've seen them in the store and have wondered if they work and if they are safe..

I use catnip about 45 min prior to leaving. They get playful at first. Mine seem to need to sleep it off afterwards. One thing I found as well, as cover the top of their crate or carrier. Cats feel more secure in closed spaces. Be sure airway to carrier in open though. Also play music they are used to that you play at home , if you do. I also try to feed mine alot prior to a long car trip. They can become carsick. If you have a favourite blanket/towel they like its good to put in the cage. Its a familiar smell. I have even used an old blouse or tee shirt in the carrier for them to lay on. I travel alot with my two cats. The only problem I still have is if the windows are cracked open and a Semi Truck passes us the noise scares them. I also talk to mine alot. Other then the above or benedryl ( the vet told me the dose etc) I found these work better than any over the counter items. The tee shirt or something of your scent seem to work the best.I don't like to give my cats any kind of drugs so found that these work better really. Catnip is a nofail! They in the 19th century boiled it and used it for babies with colic even. Its an herb with natural relaxers for cats. Also supposedly worked on humans? I hope any of this will help you. Just tried and true with me. Good luck.
