My American Pit Bull Terrier and Husky get along fine with my rats and rabbits. They understand that they are part of the pack and can't kill them. Both dogs will attack and kill wild rabbits, rats, and other small animals. When you have the mouse out and the dog is behaving badly tell him "No!" and remove him from the other animal so he learns that the bad behavior will get him no where. And NEVER trust your dog to not attack the mouse.

I got a ferret a couple of months ago, and my dogs wanted to eat her at first, for sure! I refuse to think it's impossible though!

We started with Tumble-ina in her cage only, rewarded the dogs for lying down next to the cage, for being calm, etc. and supervised every minute - otherwise they were in different rooms. That part was really not that bad, so if that is your goal - for him to be able to be calm with the mouse in the cage - I say no problem with a little practice.

Next I had tumble in my lap and let them smell her - placing her backside toward them and guarding the rest of her just in case. Praised and rewarded for calm behavior. Now I am letting her on the floor but holding their collars - they can only tolerate this for a minute or two now but improving. May never be able to let them on the floor together, but they are much, much more easygoing about her now.

Anyway, of you are looking to have the mouse *out* this will be a long term project!

Is that a picture of a Jack Russell that you own? Weren't they bred to kill rats? I would not encourage your dog and mouse to be buddies.

In my opinion it depends on the dog's personality. I have a dog that wouldn't hurt a flea. Guinea pig, rabbit, ducks etc are safe and secure around him. However a mouse is a little different. The little thing has a change of getting severely injured (as if you didn't know!)

Your dog is a predator and can kill your mouse with one quick bite. I've never let your dog get a hold of your mouse.
