Q: Can I pick up my cat by the scruff of his neck?
Is it cruel to pick up a struggling cat by the scruff of its neck?
With one hand, grasp the scruff of the cat's neck. Slip the other hand between the hind legs to support the cat from below. This is not cruel to the cat, and it’s a safe way to stop the struggling.
That scruff-of-the neck part will be a wake-up call (“Oh, I remember, that’s how Mom got my attention.”) And it will keep sharp teeth away from one hand while the other controls the cat from beneath — where claws can’t reach, for the most part.
“Close to the vest” is a good way to hold the formerly struggling cat.
