i heard that birds can not smell

Technically, birds do smell. If they couldn't, it would be difficult for owls and others to find food. But, we'll never know for sure right?

I think you heard wrong! I believe birds do have a sense of smell, but it probably isn't as good as many other animals. (That is, they depend more on sight to find food.) However, isn't smell precisely what vultures use to find food from some distance? I can't remember where, but I think I recently read that some vultures can smell blood two miles away--but don't quote me on that!
