Q: Can a Chihuahua be trained to stop peeing on rugs

Our chihuahua, Peanut, was trained as a puppy to pee on rugs (not by me). Now, I can't keep a rug in the house. Can she be retrained somehow?

I am not sure exactly how to do it but I would assume that you acrt as if the dog were still a puppy and begin to retrain. You could use the piddle pads to get him used to going on those and then work your way outside. Othersie, you could little box train him. Maybe pull up the rugs while you are training and have a litter box in a spot you like. Repetively put your dog in in numerous times per hour to get him to know what you would like. At the same time, you may want to spray something on the rugs that makes the dog stay away from it. Good luck!

Yes, but it's hard and takes a lot of patience. Start over as if she was a brand new puppy.

I would crate her any time you're away from home or can't watch her like a hawk, even if that's just for a couple minutes.

The rest of the time, keep her attached to you with a leash so she can't venture off and pee on a rug. Take her outside frequently to go to the bathroom and give her lots of praise when she goes where you want her to. She'll pick up that she gets a lot of positive attention when she goes outside, but doesn't get the same when she goes inside.

Try the piddle pads, they are scented (you can't smell it) that draws the dog to them. Who would train a dog to go on a rug???
