I really like Syrian hamsters. I've never had a hamster before. I read something that said I ould need cage that was 24 by 12, but, I can't afford a cage that size. I'm only 15. Does the cage really need to be that big??

When it comes to cages, bigger is ALWAYS better. I would suggest scouring thrift stores such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army - they sometimes have pet supplies very cheap. As long as the cage or tank is properly cleaned (use a gentle cleanser and plenty of water!) and you are sure that that a wire cage has no loose wires that may injure your pet, it should be fine.

Thrift stores also often have hamster tubes, wheels, waterbottles (run it through the dishwasher first) etc.

Absolutely! Remember that this will be your hamster's home - the place where it spends the majority of its time. It needs room for exercise, to move around. Just like we have homes that have rooms or areas for eating, sleeping, bathroom duties, etc, your hamster needs the same. Check on CraigsList & in your local trade papers like Greensheet, or even the classifieds in your local paper. As far as cost, remember that a hamster is going to cost money throughout its life. They need food & treats, bedding & litter, its always good for them to have toys & other things to exercise & entertain them, & them they sometimes have to go to the vet - they're sometimes prone to respiratory infections & can catch colds even from us humans. If you can't afford all of that, you might need to wait until you can find a way to cover all the expenses.

A 12 x 24 - I assume 'inch' cage would be about the size of a 10 gallon aquarium. That's what we used to keep our small critters in. Yes, you would need a cage at least that size. You can make it feel bigger by putting in tubes, shelves, ladders, and other climbing stuff. It will keep your critter busy too, just make sure they can't get out.

You might try looking at CraigsList or in the newspaper for giveaway cages or aquariums. You could also try posting a 'want ad' - but you should ask your parents first. Sometimes people want to get rid of a small pet and will throw in the cage, dishes, food, bedding, everything! Just look around.

Good luck!

YES--That big or even bigger! Having a cage that is too small would be like putting your hamster in a prison cell!

If you can't afford the right-sized cage, you should wait until you can afford the price or you could look for a used cage!
