Q: BLANKETING HORSES!
Sep 23, 2009
There are a lot of factors involved. If you have an older horse he may not be able to stay warm enough on his own long before a younger horse would feel the cold. I always have a lightweight blanket and a medium weight blanket for each of my horses. If it is going to be below freezing at night, I would blanket them. I always check them a few hours after putting on their blankets to make sure they are comfortable and not hot. Place your hand up underneath their blanket in the chest area and around their sides. If they feel sweaty, remove the blanket and put on a lighter weight one. We don't usually blanket our horses during the day because it's sunny here and we turn them out.
