Q: Best way to contact a rescue organization

July 22, 2009 | By Jenoreen | 5 answers | Expired: 1940 days ago

I have been trying to adopt a dog for several months now and I'm having a bit of trouble getting a response. I have sent emails requesting applications and most of the time I do not hear back from the organization at all. I don't want to be a pest or be too pushy (since I'm sure organizations get tons of emails a day!) but is there anything I should be doing to get the attention of adoption organizations and be considered as a prospective candidate? There is a specific dog I am very interested in right now and I don't want him to slip away like the others have. Thanks so much in advance!

Go to one of their adoption events! That is a sure way to meet the people running the rescue and see which dogs are available.

I agree, if you really found a dog to Rescue I would go there. I would also look for their phone number to confirm hours and locations. Don't give up some lucky dog is waiting for you!

I would definitely keep trying, sometimes they are VERY busy and run by people who have full time jobs as someone else had said. I would also try and make a trip to the place to check it out. I always like to see the organizations, kind of check up on them ;)

The rescue I volunteer with relies on volunteers to help foster, follow up on emails, assist with adoptions. Like us, many other rescues are run by individuals who also have full time jobs and have many their animals in foster homes, not in a facility. Sometimes it takes a few days or even up to a week to get a response if there are a large number of emails that have been received. I would be patient and someone will be back in touch. What I would also do, is be very specific about what your are looking for in a pet so a good match can be made.

They don't have a phone# or a facility where the dogs are kept that you can go to in person? Sounds a bit strange I've always called first & then gone in person, I have adopted greyhounds from NGAP & a Black Lab from SPCA, NGAP is National But there is a center in the area that has specific hrs.
