Q: Best first book for a new puppy owner?

Before I adopted my puppy - I got the book "The Puppy Whisperer" from a friend..... and I read that. My book has pink & yellow highllighting througout. Nice Reading - but is there a better book for a new puppy owner - someone who has had dogs before maybe but never a puppy or someone who has never even had a dog? If you work in a shelter - do you give adoptive families any written information - like about Vets and Training? I am trying to get a list of resources together for adoptive families for a Rescue group that I am going to start volunteering with.... I know from my own experience that I wished I had more information before picking my puppy up. That way I would not have gone through some of the bad experiences I did with my pup. Thanks for your suggestions.....
Many dog owners like Cesar - many trainers do not..... I do not want to get into that argument here. I do know that Cesar refers new puppy owners to good trainers.... he works and writes about grown dogs that have behavior problems. He would defer to Dr. Dunbars knowledge about puppies. I was hoping to hear about any good puppy books by him or one of his protegees? (I am spending a small fortune buying books to read and review for this project.) Since I have not gotten many responses - I guess shelters do not give any information to adoptive families? I would think from a marketing standpoint - training schools would have thought about this before and sent lists and or marketing brochures lists to "Rescue Groups"? I guess I was wrong?
