Q: Best bedding for a Chinese Dwarf Hamster?

Me and a friend are having a disagreement about which bedding is safest for our little guys(well in my case girl!) I use Carefresh for mine and have never had any problems, she uses Aspen and it seems he's always sneezing! But, she insists the pet store told her Aspen is better! Any suggestions?

Carefesh is better than aspen, but aspen is acceptable, too. Woods have oils in them that can be inhaled or absorbed into the skin. Aspen is very low in oils. Stay clear of cedar and only use pine if it's kiln dried to remove the oils. I like Kaytee Soft Sorbent the best out of all the choices out there. Kaytee also makes a bedding, Total Comfort, that is similar to Carefresh that is less expensive.

Aspen bedding is a safer alternative to pine and cedar bedding. I raise baby birds and that is what I use. It is not treated with any chemicals and is passable if ingested. Maybe something else is going on.

I lost my russian dwarf hamster to an allergic reaction to cedar bedding, the packaging said it was great for hamsters but mine was a different case. I would suggest not to use the dusty, high odor beddings, they could cause reactions to the little ones, good luck :)
