I have a border collie mix too. A soccerball is a great game. Kicking it for her and have her retriving it for you. At the same time you can teach her commands. Like wait until you kick the ball. Have her to bring it back to you and have her to drop it at your feet. This will help you bond with her.

I run my dog on the treadmill when it's raining or she is just hyper and I have already taken her out for about an hour. I have a cow dog so her energy level is unbelievable. You could try that if you have one. I also play fetch with a indoor toy while I watch TV or am on the computer.

Dont forget that she also needs mental stimulation in addition to exercise. Train her to do tricks or something if you aren't already! I'll bet she would be easy to train. You know how tired you can feel after a day of lectures or testing? It's the mental work of listening, paying attention, thinking.

The only way to get rid of excess energy is to burn it off in activity. Does she have some canine playpals she can have a playdate with? Check into dogwalkers or doggie daycare in your area. A simple way to help burn calories with not much human input is fetch - but that assumes the dog brings it back :)! If she is tennis ball oriented - a ball throwing machine is a good idea. Again minimal human input to keep her active.

I feel your pain. I have a 3 year old lab who has very high energy. When she was a puppy, I used to wake up in the morning with a pit in my stomach wondering how I was going to keep her exercised and entertained throughout the day. First and foremost, you have to walk your dog consistently for at least 45 minutes two times a day. I don't know how well your dog behaves off leash, but if you could give her sometime off leash as well to run, that would help. Also, Border Collies excel at agility and it focuses their energy because it uses both mental and physical stamina. See if there is dog school near you that offers agility classes. You can also get IQ toys that make the dog work mentally as well--kongs,etc. Also, think of playtime activities----tug, frisbee, etc. that burn energy. Good luck!

try using a treadmill. it's a great way for dogs to be able to walk or run and get much needed exercise. of course you should never push your dog to go too fast, or for too long.

try working with her on an exercise ball - great way to promote core stability and overall exercise. You would be amazed how much of a work out it is.

Do a google search to see if there is a farm nearby that lets Border Collies herd their sheep. Many border collies take to this instinctively and love the feeling of having found their purpose. It's not only physically stimulating, but mentally too!
