Based on today's economy have your spending habits changed when it comes to your pets?

What are you still willing to spend on your pets? Do you or have you bought premium and holistic foods, treats, toys? Will you still by boutique items if you were buying them before? (clothes, hair bows,etc..) I have 4 dogs and yes things are tough sometimes but somehow I always manage to put aside the money for not only nessessities but those special things as well. Just wondering what everyone else feels!

I haven't changed how I spend for my pets, including my fosters. We don't have any need for boutique items but they all still get new toys & accessories. I still buy their favorite foods & treats, premium foods, plus two of my cats are on prescription food. They all go to the vet when needed & I often bring something home for them. Nothing has changed except that we are spending even more money because we've had 3 new rescues this summer. If it came down to it, I would do without something so their lives wouldn't change.

My spending hasn't changed. It is actually about to increase as I am preparing to add a puppy to my family of two cats. I just make sure to budget for my pets. They don't have fancy toys, but I buy good quality food and keep them current with the vet.

Pet stores are also hurting and have dropped the prices on premium foods. Look for sales. Also, some shelters have free food for families having a hard time making it during these tough times.

I buy my pets what ever they need to stay happy and healthy, money is no object when it comes to them, they eat the better foods and treats.

Well, I've stopped shopping at Whole Foods and I definately have stopped buying "treats" for myself, unnecessary things like new clothes and shoes. I still get the same things for my dogs, but on the cheaper side... I used to feed them Blue, now they get Natural Selection... I take them to a vet in the ghetto who is waaay better than the vet in the snooty neighborhood I used to take them to and spend a third of the money... I don't take my one dog to training or agility classes anymore.... I just take him to the park more often (which honestly I wouldn't be able to do if I had never taken the training classes because I had no control over him before). Unfortunately, the economy HAS effected the way me and my dogs live.

Yes, but I'm not sure it was the economy. We had a dog adopt us and that has really put me over my budget for pets. With the added vet bills, frontline and heartworm preventitive, it has caused everyone to make a few sacrifices. They still get a good quality dog food, but i have cut back on treats and shop for bargins. As far as toys go, I am always on the look out for bargins. Unfortunatly two of my pack loves to destroy stuffed toys so I buy childrens stuffed animals at garage sales for a quarter and they love it. They are now getting more toys than they use to and couldn't be happier. I am really careful to only buy toys that have the polyfil stuffing and not beanie babies or styrofoam ball filled ones. But mostly the sacrifice has come out of our own human food budget.

I have heard a number of stories about people changing to a less expensive food, etc. with today's economy. Bad economy or not, I have always tried to make good decisions about where to spend my money. I would not say my spending on them has changed. My dogs are not on the cheapest dog food, because I believe what I am giving them is better for them and I will not compromise that. They get the veterinary care they need, just as always. As far as treats and toys, I am spending about the same there, too.

I have become one of the statistics,,,,my position was eliminated....But so far no changes in what or how I feed the pets. They actually like having me home more one on one time with the cat and longer walks with the dog, but hopefully it will NOT last forever or we all may be hungry.
