Q: Auctioning off a dog for charity...good idea or bad idea?

A local charity (non animal related) has decided to auction off a dog this year to raise money. I want people's opinions. Is this a good idea or bad idea and why? From their email, they will be offering a puppy at the auction and want suggestions of breed so they can get that type of dog from a breeder.

I've heard of it being done before, but as a part of an animal related fund raiser and as a youngish shelter dog. I don't really think the idea of getting a purebreed puppy for the auction sounds like a good idea. As Jayne M. said, there's a risk of not enough thought going into the ownership, and I think too there's a risk of it being a 'fashion accessory purchase' which is never a good motive for a pet.

They auctioned a golden retriever puppy at our son's school once -- it went for over $8,000 -- great hit

I don't think it is a good idea. It is sort of like winning a goldfish at the fair, not enough thought goes into the ownership part.
