Q: Auctioning off a dog for charity...good idea or bad idea?

A local charity (non animal related) has decided to auction off a dog this year to raise money. I want people's opinions. Is this a good idea or bad idea and why? From their email, they will be offering a puppy at the auction and want suggestions of breed so they can get that type of dog from a breeder.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with the most of the folks here, I think this is a pretty idea. Our potential adopters have a 24 hour wait, and during that time, their application is thoroughly checked. Just giving an animal to the highest bidder. I don't know.

People who love and want the pet that's being auctioned could be the only one's allowed to bid on the animal but that would limit the money being raised. On the other hand why would you want to auction a life. I would have to say no to this one.

I do not like it, many times an owner is not prepared, does not know about the breed. Auctioning a life is pretty bad to me.

Not sure about this being the best way for charities to raise money. In the past I have heard about a charity dog auction and the winner usually does not take the dog home immediately. That way they have some time to think about their decision and do the necessary research to determine whether this breed of dog is suitable for their life style. Also the breeder of this pup should be given the opportunity to connect with the winning bidder to discuss the particulars of the breed and their sales contract.

I personally think it is a bad idea. Just because someone has money doesn't make them an automatic great pet owner.

Not a good idea. People mean well but it's not a good way to match a dog with an owner.

My answer is one word - adopt! I am firmly against the idea of 'auctioning' a puppy...This is something that one of our loathsome breeders would do! A dog is a living, breathing being....Would you be ok with the organization auctioning off a child? If they want to auction off something, go get a freakin' deluxe toaster that will press your socks while it makes your breakfast!

Depends on the auction, I would think...I could imagine a situation where there would be lots of animal lovers, and a puppy who's parentage is known to be good is auctioned. If everyone gets a chance to meet the puppy and knows where it came from, then it could be ok. Mostly it sounds chancy and possibly and abusive situation to the puppy unless circumstances were "just right".
