Q: Auctioning off a dog for charity...good idea or bad idea?

A local charity (non animal related) has decided to auction off a dog this year to raise money. I want people's opinions. Is this a good idea or bad idea and why? From their email, they will be offering a puppy at the auction and want suggestions of breed so they can get that type of dog from a breeder.

BAD IDEA. THE DOG MOST LIKELY WILL NOT FIND A GOOD OWNER OR A SERIOUS OWNER.

I don't like this idea at all. People should take time with an animal to make sure it's a good match for the family, not win a dog in an auction. Besides, I'm a shelter person and I'd rather they go get one of the millions of dogs at a shelter than buy a breeder dog.

how awful when there are so many other fundraisers out there--who is to say this poor dog would get a good home!

I don't like the idea. They may get the dog and just give it away.

I agree that this is a bad idea. Buying a dog on a whim at an auction without meeting the dog or its breeder is a recipe for disaster. Not to mention that a reputable breeder would never agree to this, so the organization will essentially be supporting unethical breeders.

I think this is a horrible idea. There is no way to tell what kind of home the poor puppy will be given, possibly end up in a shelter. Research & knowledge should be involved in getting a pet, not the highest bidder.

Do you know if this is for a charitable cause or greed.Maybe their should be a permit that has to be bought to ensure the legality of it.Otherwise it sounds like animal cruelty to me.

Very BAD idea. Choosing a pet is a very interactive and personal decision, it should be made with great care, not with a ticket.

I think it's an awful idea as you have no way of controlling who takes the dog home other than the highest bidder. The puppy deserves better than that. We actually had that same thing happen here a couple months ago. A couple of us were ready to bid on the little guy until we saw who was going to get him. The girls I was with knew the bidder and that she would give the pup a good home. That is hopefully a happy ending if you know the winning bidder....I still think it's a horrible idea.

I think this is an aweful idea. You have know idea what type of home this dog is going to. How will they know if the dog is going to a stable home.
