Q: Are multiple cats okay?
My mother is still a long way from becoming a “crazy cat lady.” She has only three — but also a soft spot for taking in strays. How can I convince her to cap the cat population?
Purr-r-r-suade her, nicely, that multiple cats have trouble being nice to each other.
When cats can’t find enough personal space, they find ways to make their displeasure known to others in their human and feline family. Aggression, anxieties, urine marking and lapses in litter-box hygiene tend to escalate with each addition to the feline population. The same things can happen to the humans (well, maybe not the urine marking) but you get the idethe stress of too many cats begins to outweigh the pleasure of their company.
However many cats your mom has, here are some peacekeeping measures:
1) Make sure each cat has his or her very own comfort-zone space — and not on the floor. Elevation counts, whether it is a chair seat, a window perch, or the penthouse of the kitty condo.
2) Sanitation. Sanitation. Sanitation. Each cat deserves its own litter box — regularly maintained — and a spare pan or two can’t hurt.
3) Separate (and preferably, separated) food and water will make each cat feel special.
4) Personal attention (*grooming, petting, conversation, and miscellaneous pampering) for each cat reduces jealousies among them all.
If your mom can do all this for multiple cats, more power to her.

As long as someone is financially able to care for animals properly, gives them the TLC & the space they need, there is nothing wrong with having multiple cats. Having multiple animals doesn't make you a hoarder. Hoarding is a psychological problem & the person is not able to see that animals are sick & need care or living in filth. They usually even hang onto them after death. That's a whole other ballgame.
What is wrong is asking 100s of predetermined questions & booting real zootooers questions down the line so they don't get answered just so your friend Roger can spam his business & website & get free advertising. Don't know about others here, but that has the opposite effect with me. I wouldn't use your clinic if it were the last on earth because you're so annoying.
